John Hare called it narcissism. Ron Rittgers called it intellectual gluttony. Academia draws the self into an unfamiliar social construct of self-preservation. Glory in the self in survival becomes the ultimate aim with this obsession with knowledge. 

But Jesus calls me to die to myself.
