Here is a summation of Baxter’s work “How to Spend the Day with God.”

“A holy life is inclined to be made easier when we know the usual sequence and method of our duties – with everything falling into its proper place. Therefore, I shall give some brief directions for spending the day in a holy manner.”

Sleep: Get enough so as to not be sluggish in getting out of bed.

First Thought: Give God your first awaking thoughts.

Prayer: Solitude first, then communal prayer.

Family Worship: At a time when the family is free of interruptions.

Ultimate Purpose: “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Cor 10:31.

Diligence in Your Calling:

  1. Put to death all the fleshly lusts and desires.
  2. Keep out idle thoughts.
  3. Do not lose precious time.
  4. Be obedient to God.
  5. Spend time in holy duties.
  6. Expect God’s blessing and provision.
  7. Encourage the health of the body.

Temptations and Things That Corrupt: Be acquainted with your temptations, and watch against them.

Meditation: Upon the infinite goodness and perfections of God, Christ and temptation.

The Only Motive: Similar to “Ultimate Purpose.”

Redeeming the Time: Place high value on your time.

Eating and Drinking: With moderation.

Prevailing Sins: Lament, confess, and repent.

Relationships: Remember the special duties.

Closing the Day: Review the actions and mercies of the day past. Give thanks.
