I was hanging out at the Rivendell Institute last year to fix their computer network as a favor. Greg Ganssle just happened to be in. So we got to talking about philosophy. He gave me a crash course on the six movements that constitute the postmodern movement in philosophy. Here’s a distillation of what I can make out from those notes that I managed to scribble down:

  • Mechanism – Decartes, Newton
  • Empiricism – David Hume
  • Constructivism – Kant, objectivist. Leads to relativism.
  • Romanticism – “science and logic are somehow cold and meaning is found somewhere else”
  • Neo-Romanticism – Nietzsche
  • Pragmaticism – Richard Rorty, Purse, Dewey
